Nature's Lanterns

Crickets have taken over the sounds of the owls at night here. For the moment their chirps are louder than the air conditioner, and surprisingly long as they stay outside that is. As I sit here looking out into the night I wonder, "Where are the fireflies?

I kind of miss those natural lanterns of my youth because they taught me to think about how the environment and its inhabitants can influence us. Beavers and dams, bats and radar, birds and flight: there is probably little we have figured out that some other critter hasn't already figured out first in its own way. The macro world of space travel may be ours; but I don't know that for sure. I wonder what kind of little critters may inhabit the quantum world, traveling in ways through time and space that I can’t begin imagine. Maybe the secret to the soul exists there. Humph, I’ll have to think about that last sentence for a while.

On another note it has been good to have a few family members visit over the last few weeks. I can’t say that a rewrite I have been working on will be completed by the end of the month, and for the first time in a long time I am just fine with that. The best work we do in life more often than not has nothing to do with monetary gain.
